Keeping it in the family, the hive in Eden’s car park (the Hercules Hive) has been repopulated with a swarm from a hive in managing director Hugh Walker’s garden. Swarming is the natural reproductive instinct of bees and will happen annually in most healthy colonies. Bees are a unique species where the older generation departs the “family home” leaving it to the next generation. This has been a special year with a huge number of swarms occurring in early May. It became a news item as so many swarms were seen in the skies over London in one particular week. A swarm can look scary but in fact bees are at their most docile when swarming. They have fed well before swarming and are only interested in safeguarding their queen and finding a good place to settle.
