The Sustainable Spread 8
The Sustainable Spread 8
Welcome to the eighth edition of The Sustainable Spread!
We’ve just launched our brand-new events brochure, made a big improvement to our packaging, and spotlighted our brilliant tea partners. Plus, there’s a quick tip to help cut food waste at home, and an exhibition not to miss this weekend.
PLANING AN EVENT? START HERE..
Our brand-new events brochure has arrived, and it's packed with delicious options to make your upcoming event unforgettable. Breakfasts for the early birds? Check. Working lunches that actually work? Got those too. Warming bowls for midday meetings and classy canapes for evening do's? Of course. We've gathered everything into a single, practical guide. And it’s not just food - we can sort your drinks, equipment and friendly event staff too.
Packaging is one of the biggest sustainability challenges we face as caterers. For years, PLA (polylactic acid) was presented as the ideal solution for sustainable food wrap, but the reality hasn’t lived up to the promise. PLA requires very specific industrial composting conditions to break down properly (which still aren’t widely available), and worse, it often contaminates food waste streams and ends up in landfill or incineration anyway.
So, we've made a change.
Global Flow Of Packaging Waste
After eight months of testing, research and expert input, we’ve officially waved goodbye to PLA wrap and switched to a new biodegradable wrap made with DegrAid (BOPP Proganic), a clever additive that helps the film break down into a harmless wax, eaten by microbes. No microplastics. No mess. And bonus: it’s also recyclable and won’t disrupt recycling streams. It might be a small tweak in terms of waste volumes, but it’s a big step forward for packaging.
FOOD WASTE TIP: LOVE YOUR LEFTOVERS.
Looking to cut down on food waste at home? One of the easiest (and tastiest) ways is to get creative with your leftovers.
Instead of tossing out yesterday’s roast veg or that lonely half an onion, think of them as building blocks for your next meal. Stir them into soups, toss them into salads, fold them into frittatas or whizz them into sauces. Almost anything can be reinvented with a little imagination (and maybe a splash of olive oil).
Top tip:
Keep a “use me soon” box in your fridge, a little corner dedicated to items that need eating up. It’s a simple way to stay mindful of what’s at risk of going to waste. Less waste, more flavour. Win-win.
